Grooming
Lakies are a 'coated terrier' and as such need regular grooming. They have a non-shed coat which means they drop little or no hair - a big advantage if you have allergies or want to have your dog share your home with you! Lakies therefore depend on you to keep their coat looking and feeling good. There are two ways you can maintain a Lakies coat or jacket: * you can remove the dead hairs by 'stripping' the coat or * you can clip the body coat with dog clippers As a general rule, show dogs have their coat stripped so they look fantastic and have a hard weatherproof jacket of rich colour. The art of stripping a terrier coat can take many years to perfect - it is not a skill that can be learnt overnight! Pet Lakies are usually clipped, mainly because it is easier and quicker to clip a coat. Unfortunately this tends to soften the coat and remove the rich colour of the jacket but it is easier/quicker to keep the dog looking neat, tidy and very distinctive. Which ever method you choose, Lakies should be combed/brushed at least weekly so it is important that they get used to being groomed from an early age. Toenails should be clipped approx. every 2 weeks. The ears (internal) should be cleaned weekly and the fuzzy hair removed from inside the ears. Furnishings (the hair on the muzzle and legs) is kept longer than the body jacket but trimmed or pulled to keep it shaped and tidy. The hair is kept short around the vent & inside legs. Lakies should not end up looking like a Schnauzer or Bedlington when they have been groomed. They have their own distinctive look - smart and workmanlike!
